Description
This is a 114 years old (1906-2020) elegantly framed photogravure of an old man known as the Preacher. This picture really represents the celebrated Menonite Preacher, Renier Anslo. The original red chalk etching was signed and dated 1640. The original painting can be viewed at the National Gallery of London. This engraving was part of a memorial publication of his tercentenary(300 years:1606-1906) and was first published in parts on March 9, 1906 and completed on 1907 by Wm. Heinemann of London.
It is in excellent condition and elegantly framed. It measures 14 inches high by 12 inches wide and the image size is about 5.25 inches by 5 inches.
The basic process of photogravure was developed in 1850. It is a photographic image produced from and engraving plate. The process is rarely used today due to the costs involved, but it produces prints that have the subtlety of a photograph and the art quality of a lithograph. In essence, the production of photogravure consisting of 3 steps: (1)taking the picture, (2) producing a copper printing plate of the image and (3)printing the image on paper. The result is an etched copper plate of the original photographic image.
