Antique (1906) Rare Etching of Nicholas Bruyningh, By Rembrand Van Rijn, 1652 (sfto)

This is a 114 years old (1906-2020) elegantly framed photogravure of a gentleman, identified as Nicholas Bruyningh. The original painting  was made not dated but  later known to be made in 1652. The original painting can be viewed at the Cassel Gallery. This engraving was part of a memorial publication of his tercentenary(300 years:1606-1906) and was first published in parts on March 9, 1906 and completed on 1907 by Wm. Heinemann of London.

It is in excellent condition and elegantly framed. It measures 17 inches high by 15 inches wide and the image size is about 8 inches by 6.5 inches. I have a matching framed photogravure of Angela Bas, better known as the Lady with a Fan as shown in one of the photos and it is being sold separately in another listing.

The basic process of photogravure was developed in 1850. It is a photographic image produced from an engraving plate. The process is rarely used today due to the costs involved, but it produces prints that have the subtlety of a photograph and the art quality of a lithograph. In essence, the production of photogravure consisting of 3 steps: (1)taking the picture, (2) producing a copper printing plate of the image and (3)printing the image on paper. The result is an etched copper plate of the original photographic image.
