Description
This is a 111 years old (1906-2017) elegantly framed photogravure of an unknown sophisticated Lady with a fan, later identified as Agatha Bas, born in 1611 and passed away in 1658. She was married to Nicolas Van Bambeeck, a wool merchant. The original painting was made and dated in 1641. The original painting can be viewed at the Buckingham Palace. This engraving was part of a memorial publication of his tercentenary(300 years:1606-1906) and was first published in parts on March 9, 1906 and completed on 1907 by Wm. Heinemann of London.
It is in excellent condition and elegantly framed. It measures 17 inches high by 15 inches wide and the image size is about 8 inches by 6.5 inches. I have a matching framed engraving of Nicholas Bruyning by Rembrandt shown in one of the photos and it is being sold separately in another listing.
The basic process of photogravure was developed in 1850. It is a photographic image produced from an engraving plate. The process is rarely used today due to the costs involved, but it produces prints that have the subtlety of a photograph and the art quality of a lithograph. In essence, the production of photogravure consisting of 3 steps: (1)taking the picture, (2) producing a copper printing plate of the image and (3)printing the image on paper. The result is an etched copper plate of the original photographic image.
This is a used item and it is being sold as is, as shown or as described.
