Genuine United States Mint: 1793-1857 Large Cent (50522)
The Large Cent, along with the Half-Cent, was the first coin struck by the new United States Goverment. Early coinage laws specified that the Cent should weigh exacty twice as much as the half Cent resulting in a coin even larger that our modern Quarters. Designs changed frequently and were often recipients of colorful nicknames One was called the “Blowsy Barmaid” because of Lierty’s sleepy and disheveld appearance. Another design has the The Drunken Diecutter’s Obverse”, so-called because of the irregularly-cut digits in the date. Yet another earned the nickname, “The. Office Boy Reverse”. It looks like the office bo cut it while the engraver was out to lunch. By 1857 Large Cents has become unpopular and expensive to produce, and the new smaller Cent was introduced.
