Genuine United States Mint: 1859-1864 Copper Nickel Indian Cent (50522) 

The historic cent is one of Ameria’s first  “Nickels”. Produced of a copper and nickel composition, it was commonly referred to as a “Nickle” or “Nick” until the 5 -cent nickle pieces were intoduced in 1866. The Copper-Nickel Cent disappeared from circulation during the Civil War, and in 1864 nickel disappered from the Cent coin altogether, replaced by a composition of copper and zinc. The famous Indian Head Cent was designed by Chief Mint Engraver James B. Longacre. The Indian Head Cent wa an immediate success when it was introduced and remained popular during the 50 years it was produced.
