Description

Genuine United States Mint: 1892-1916 Silver Barber Dime  (C0522)

The new Liberty Head designed by Charles E. Barber, Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, gained immediate public acceptance. It was a welcome change from the seated figure that had dominated nearly all silver coinage since 1836. An absence of detail gave the design a new bold look. It also helped it to wear well, keeping the Barber Dime in circulation for a long time. As late as 1945 Barber dimes could be found in pocket change; as a result they became a popular series for collectors to save by date and mint. The rarest of the series is the 1894-S. Mint records show that only 24 pieces were ever made, and no more than a dozen can be traced to collections today.
