Genuine United States Mint – 1946-1951 (J0522)
This is the first U.S. Mint coin to feature the image of an African American. It was issued to perpetuate the ideals and teachings of Booker T. Washington and to construct memorials to his memory. The son of a plantation cook and an unknown white man. Washington was born a slave in 1856. Freed after the Civil War, he went on to become a renowned educator and founder of the Tuskegee Institute, as well as an adviser to U.S. presidents on racial issues and on the appointment of blacks to governmanet positions. He received honorary degrees from Harvad University and Darmouth College. Washingon died in 1915.
